Tackling Electronic Waste, One Piece at a Time

Posted by & filed under Uncategorized.

Did you realize that worldwide it is estimated that there are around two billion cell phones being used? It’s true! And the problem with that is users replace them every 18 months, on average. Even if you just look at the over 19 million cell phones used just in Canada, it is clear to see that a lot of cell phones are being trashed each year.

The problem with trashing cell phones is that they go to the landfills. Sure, they are small and don’t require a lot of space, but it’s what is inside them that is of concern. Cell phones contain toxins, such as lithium batteries and flame retardant, not to mention that they are non-biodegradable to begin with.

So over the course of the next five years we just may end up with 60 million cell phones in Canadian landfills! This is because the research shows only around 15 percent of the time people recycle them.

So one small, yet important, way that you can help the planet and keep more things out of Ottawa landfills, is to recycle your cell phone when you are ready for a new one. There are many places that offer cell phone drop boxes and even some charity groups that collect them for fundraising purposes. By dropping your discarded cell phone in one of those, it will have a chance to be recycled for the copper, silver, palladium, and platinum.
